As you'll see if you read the comments appended to yesterday's item about Star Jones, she basically confirmed to Larry King on Thursday that a "medical intervention" facilitated her loss of roughly half her starting body mass. What's more interesting to me, however, is that ABC insists that The View's decision not to renew Jones' contract was motivated by a dramatic change in her popularity with the show's audience, which seemed to dwindle right along with her weight.

There are many variables that may or may not come into play here. But you wonder: What, if anything, does Star's literal and figurative loss of face with the show's fans tell us about America's tastes and preferences?
