And our crack media outdo themselves again.

A police officer, Sgt. Timothy Simpson, was killed in Philly late last night. There's been a rash of such deaths lately, and the city is taking it pretty hard, wringing its hands over how to stem the tide. Tonight's 5 p.m. newscast opened with tributes to the fallen officer and related commentary.

So here's the segue* from that to the traffic segment, courtesy of ABC's youngish traffic reporter, Matt Pellman: "Yes, it was a rough day in Philadelphia today.... And it's a rough start to the commute home for area motorists..."

* The video embedded above is not the one from tonight's newscast. Just wanted you to see the guy "in the flesh."

Lately??? Sounds remarkably like the Philly where I was stationed back in the early '70s.

And your news whore sounds a lot like an ex-friend of ours, who wrapped up a description of his ex-wife's suicide with, "Meanwhile, my own adventure continues." Such grace...

And, looking in the lower right of the video, you can see that the reporting of traffic problems caused by the police activity is sponsored by... Dunkin' Donuts.

You can't write stuff like this.

Sounds like the "bubble headed bleach blonde" lyrics from "Dirty Laundry" by Don Henley.

Remember that randomness is lumpy. A rash of XXX in a particular geography may be nothing more than normal random distribution.

(The book "Nudge" has an excellent discussion of this effect as it relates to cancer deaths, for example.)

Guys and gals, this is completely off-topic, but have to share it with you. (Steve, and all the writers/journalists here, please do not get depressed and/or fly into an uncontrollable rage. Please. Remember, it's only money, after all.;))

OK. Sarah Palin is reportedly getting a book deal worth... 7 mil. Yes, a book deal. It is, of course, unclear (ha ha) who will actually write this, er, book, but that's not relevant, I suppose. After all, Joe-The-Non-Plumber has a book deal in the works as well, titled "Standing Up for American Values" or somethin' such.

Anyway, some young enterprising reporters got a hold of the Palin's book table of contents and posted it on-line. So without further ado, enjoy!
