Does Oprah know her flock?

In the summer of 2010, NBC tried to tap into Secret-mania and the rest of woo-hoo-world by trotting out its new reality series, Breakthrough with Tony Robbins. But NBC was late to the party, catching the wave after it had already broken on-shore and begun to ebb. By summer 2010, SHAMland had taken its share of shots. By summer 2010, major networks, like, oh, ABC, were already running hour-long shows like, oh, a certain self-help critic's Prime Time Mind Games segment on James Ray's sweat lodge debacle (which ABC plans to rerun, by the way. Check your listings). Tony failed to, er, attract a sufficiently large audience, and the series was unceremoniously canceled after just two shows.

Now comes Oprah Winfrey and OWN.
Despite some recent successes (thanks in no small part to the untimely death of Whitney Houston), OWN has struggled to find its voice...and a consistent audience. Winfrey's people had a semi-noisy falling out with Jenny McCarthy before the show even got on-air, and then pulled the plug on Rosie's ratings loser after five lackluster months.

Desperate for content to fill her flailing network, Oprah has decided to resuscitate Tony's moribund show, apparently under the theory that, whatever else viewers may or may not like, there is no limit to her disciples' appetite for empowering fluff.

So I guess we'll see if the Big T still has enough mojo to prop up the Big O. (Nasty, gratuitous, thoroughly cheap shot: Is Tony still taller than Oprah is wide, these days?)

I'm surprised there was not a show in development with Alexandra Wentworth. She is the wife of George Stephanopoulus. I remember seeing her on Oprah's show all the time. Although I remember Ms. Wentworth had a morning show co-hosted with Jack Ford that was a blatant rip-off of Regis and Kelly (or Kathie Lee). That show only lasted a year.

I would think Discovery would give OWN another year maximum before they pull the plug on the network. It's been a colossal disaster and shareholders are probably complaining already.

Then Oprah will announce she's returning to daytime. And that will really be interesting because Katie Couric's show is going into Oprah's old time slot in most major cities.!/VillifiedIdiot said...

In the voice of old Chinese wise man, "YU KRUERISS!" -Translation, "You're clueless!" i.e. You're right there in the heat of the kitchen, but don't have any earthly god damn clue as to WTF is cookin… (And that's putting it lightly)… It's like u start the conversation to raise awareness but then are oblivious to the real & harmful fallout, real brain damage, real lives lost…Look up ambiguous loss & tell me what the price of that is from 'self help' in the public domain meant to have one take oneself out of the game where you are leveled to avolition, apathy & anomie (NOT a AAA anyone would consider 4 a rescue or as a minor 'league of one's own')…Where's the dialogue with Attorney Generals or medical establishment in all this? KRUERISS AUR AROUND U.S. -If you are really concerned about eliminating pernicious literature permanently, then utilize an argument of physical harm/injury vs. strictly financial motives which only serve to add insult to an already injured segment of an unwary public affected directly or collaterally from this do-it-yourself brain stroke masquerading on library shelves all over the world as benign 'self help' (if that was ever a misnomer)…Don't let your new nickname be 'Clueless' Joe from NOW on…I know you can do better AND make a REAL difference…But if you're scared, then say you're scared AND if you care, SHOW you care; because your actions thus far haven't served to evict this egregious of errors in a game that shouldn't even exist let alone be played! I love the smell of umbrage in the morning as much as the next person, but prefer it to be appropriately directed and (preferably) clearly written, sans extensive manifestations of the Agnew Syndrome. But that's just me. :-)

The Big O is really floundering with this network thing.

I agree with Cal. I give OWN, maybe, another year. The Big O should have learned her lesson with Oxygen, but she didn't. She never discusses Oxygen and distances herself from that experiment.

I too wondered about Alexandra Wentworth. I don't see her around the Big O as much. Wentworth is as annoying as Jenny McCarthy to me, but without the stupid ideas. I'm glad I don't have to see either one of them.

Is it just me, or does the pic look like Tony doing the tango with a VERY reluctant hostage?
